How to remove blank from your Power BI Slicer (Easy Solution)

In this article we will give you an easy solution on how to remove blank values from your slicer in Power BI.

Problem: Blank value in Power BI slicer

The issue you’re experiencing is a blank value or the word ‘blank’ in your slicer.

It usually appears as the top option of the slicer and will look something like the example below:

This is an issue and we want to remove the blank option from the Power BI slicer.

Cause: Blank value in table

The problem is caused by there being a blank value in the column you are using for your slicer.

Here is the table of data that was used in our slicer example above:

As you can see there is a blank country name and this is feeding through to the slicer.

Solution: Remove the blank in filter pane

To remove the blank value from your slicer in Power BI, you need to filter it out.

You can do this using the Filters pane in Power BI. If you haven’t enabled this already, navigate to View in the top ribbon and then select Filters. This will open the filters pane.

When you click on your slicer and look in the filters pane, you will see the column you have used for the values.

In this example it is the Country column.

After expanding the column you will have options to add or change a filter, as below.

You need to deselect the blank value and your filter pane should look like this:

Note: There are options for advanced filtering rather than basic filtering.

This is useful if you want to filter numerous values from your visual. In this case, we would choose the option to show items where value does not equal blank.

Once you have amended the filter, your visual should have removed the blank option and look like the example below:

Fixed!
